Medical Aid companies are aware that home care is a quality and cost effective way of managing their clients and are supportive of providing home rather than hospital based care.

THE EVIDENCE

Evidence from multiple international studies confirm the economics of home care in lieu of hospitalisation and the rationale / economic logic for offering members the option of home care. These studies suggest that regular monitoring, early identification and management of medical issues of clients in the community result in reduced incidence of patient hospitalisation, reduced length of hospital stay if required and on average as much as a thirty percent reduction in overall healthcare costs. 

 

An additional benefit to Medical Scheme Providers would be the added appeal to new members who would prefer home care options and the CONCIERGE pro active approach, resulting in improved new client recruitment. Generally, studies suggest that clients fear hospital admissions / prefer management of medical issues with the dignity, privacy and familiarity of their own home environment under the care of experienced nurses & doctors / have shorter hospitalisation if required

 

Further evidence based studies have demonstrated :

• that stable patients with reversible medical conditions who are in hospital for intravenous fluids / antibiotics could receive such care at home under the coordinated care of doctors, nurses & other professionals. 

• coordinated, well managed home care reduces hospitalisations by a third and Hospital in the Home’ management is 38% cheaper than in-hospital care 

• that palliative care patients with a life expectancy of potentially less than a year and including those suffering from conditions such as end stage cardiac failure, renal failure, lung disease, stroke, cancer, AIDS, intracranial bleed unfit for surgery, or were post cardiac arrest. These patients in particular wish to minimise further hospitalisation and greatly prefer the dignity and comfort of ongoing management in their own homes with home care / nursing & medical support as required and in contact with family and friends thereby significantly improving their quality of life !! Palliative home care teams, as opposed to care provided in hospital outpatient clinics, reduce hospitalisation / emergency department admissions by about 10% and reduce overall costs by 33.3% compared to costs of in hospital care

• finally, that qualified home care teams treating psychiatric patients in the community in lieu of hospitalisation, reduce healthcare costs by 31% whilst clinical outcomes remain similar.
